Anyone who follows the link from the email will first be redirected via a URL shortener. The link target is then “www.bundesminsiterium-der-finanzen.com”, a domain that has only been registered since March 29, 2023. Here the perpetrators caused a typographical error (intentionally or accidentally). Instead of Ministry it says Ministry.

The page stored there was modeled on the original website of the Federal Ministry of Finance, https://www.bundesfinanzministerium.de/. A large part, including the other subpages, have been copied or content is being reloaded or redirected accordingly.

The perpetrators probably then contact the interested parties (by phone or email) and then request further information, such as bank details, ID details, etc.

What should I do if I fell for it?

If you have fallen for the scam, report it to your local police . Tell us what data you sent to the perpetrators and what data may have been requested later.

If you only fell for the first step, do not respond to further requests/inquiries by phone or email. Also, be careful when files are sent to you. There can always be malware involved.
