Salmonella infestation in sweets! The Ferrero company has recalled all products after salmonella was discovered in various children's products. Now, due to the salmonella cases, an entire factory of the confectionery manufacturer is being closed.

The suspicion of salmonella at Ferrero has taken on a new dimension. As early as December 2021, Ferrero became aware of a case of salmonella in the factory in Arlon, Belgium, which has been the focus of the food authorities for several days. This emerges from a statement from Ferrero France in Luxembourg. This states, among other things, “ As part of our control mechanisms, salmonella was detected at the Arlon plant in Belgium on December 15, 2021.” ( Source )

In addition, Ferrero published the following announcement on April 8, 2022

Ferrero is recalling various batches of “kinder” brand chocolate products in Germany that were manufactured in Belgium. In the Belgian factory, salmonella was found in the area of two raw material tanks as part of self-checks on December 15, 2021. Further investigations have shown that the salmonella detected there has a genetic similarity to salmonella from numerous cases of illness in several European countries, including Germany. We take these findings extremely seriously because protecting consumers is our top priority. The following products are therefore being recalled in Germany:

Salmonella infection manifests itself within a few days of infection with diarrhea, abdominal pain and occasionally vomiting and a slight fever. The symptoms usually go away on their own after several days. In particular, infants, small children, seniors and people with weakened immune systems can develop more severe illnesses. People who have eaten this food and develop severe or persistent symptoms should seek medical attention and report a possible salmonella infection. Seeking preventive medical treatment without symptoms does not make sense. (Source Robert Koch Institute)

The EFAS (EU authority) also writes on its website:

“The outbreak is characterized by an unusually high proportion of children being admitted to hospital, some with severe clinical symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea. Based on patient interviews and initial epidemiological studies, specific chocolate products were identified as the likely route of infection. The affected cases were identified using advanced molecular typing techniques. Because this testing method is not routinely performed in all countries, some cases may go undetected.

Product recalls have been initiated in several countries, including Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, to prevent the consumption of products potentially contaminated with Salmonella. In countries where cases are reported, public health and food safety authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the cause and extent of contamination and to ensure that contaminated products are not placed on the market.” ( Source )
