Racism is not just an individual problem, but a structural problem. It leads to discrimination, hate speech and violence and, last but not least, endangers democracy and the peaceful coexistence of everyone.
The Austrian government program therefore includes a number of measures to combat racism, the central one being the development of a national action plan against racism and discrimination.
About the action plan against racism
The European Commission presented an action plan in September 2020 encouraging member states to adopt national action plans by the end of 2022. This deadline has already been missed. The government doesn't have much time left; the current government period ends in autumn 2024 at the latest.
“ Racist and discriminatory behaviors can be embedded in social, financial and political institutions that influence the centers of power and policy-making
,” says the EU action plan. People experience this structural racism by experiencing violence or being denied access to jobs, health care, housing, financing or education.
Last but not least, the racist statements made by a politician to a school fund and the subsequent right-wing extremist actions in front of the school in question make clear the need to develop a comprehensive strategy against xenophobia, extremism and hate speech.
No Hate Speech Committee wants implementation of the EU action plan in Austria
Members of the No Hate Speech Committee are therefore appealing to the federal government to begin drawing up a national action plan as quickly as possible and recommend involving experts: “ The effects of racist discrimination are serious, not only for those affected, but for society as a whole .
Quick action is therefore required.
“
Discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin is prohibited in the European Union (EU). And yet this discrimination still exists in our society. It is not enough to be against racism. We have to take active action against it.
EU Action Plan against Racism 2020-2025
The Austrian No Hate Speech Committee wants to raise awareness of the issue of hate speech on the Internet and address the causes and contexts in order to counteract the acceptance of hate speech and combat racism, sexism and discrimination on the Internet. In a week, on March 21st, the International Day Against Racism, declared by the United Nations in 1966, will be celebrated.
The following members of the committee support this appeal to the federal government:
