Not only taken out of context, but also not current: the video with supposed refugees in the water near Crete.

It is alleged that a video showing refugees in the water was produced for propaganda purposes.

This gives the impression that it is a current video from Greece.
However, the video is from 2018 and shows filming for a documentary.

Back in 2018, we received countless requests for a video that was shared on social media. At the time, it was claimed that a film crew was staging drowning refugees. Now the video is being shared again, it is implied that it is a current video.

In the video you can see several women and children in the shallow water on the coast, then a panning shot of a film crew.

Already exposed as a false claim in 2018

The colleagues at Correctiv solved the mystery on August 16, 2018:
These are recordings from a documentary !

Research by EchtNow and Jacques Pezet revealed that the video shown was actually filmed on the Greek island of Crete. Namely in Ierapetra. In response to a press query from August 8, 2018 to the nearby restaurant Levante, it responded via Facebook Messenger:

“The restaurant replied to us via messenger that the video shows the filming of a documentary film presented at the Ierapetra Documentary Film Festival. The camerawoman seen in the video is the director and producer. The restaurant also explained to us that the film is about Greek refugees during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 to 1922.”

The restaurant sent EchtNow the link to the website of the Ierapetra Documentary Film Festival. This made it possible to identify the film crew shown in the film who actually produced “Land of the Painful Virgin Mary”

The scene in the documentary

At second 7 of the trailer (large image) you can also see the scene from the distributed video (small image):

According to EchtNow, Eleni Vlassi was surprised by the use of the images from her film shoot. In a statement dated August 13, 2018, she explained that the video circulating on the Internet shows the shooting of her film “Land of the Painful Mary”, that it was filmed without her permission and also warned that she could take legal action against anyone , who spread false reports about the shooting of their film.

She emphasizes that the filmed scene has no connection to today's migrants, but rather addresses the situation of Greek refugees from Asia Minor in 1922.

Result:

In Crete, a film crew actually staged a film sequence with refugees in the sea. However, this is not a depiction of current incidents with drowning refugees, but rather the situation of Greek refugees from Asia Minor in 1922.

Anyone who distributes the video without the background knowledge that it is footage of a documentary is generating false news !
Anyone who leaves out the source leaves room for interpretation, which can of course also result in the claim that fake news is being produced for “system media”.
