This is a scam in which the victims make themselves liable to prosecution. The Düren police warn.
The financial agent scam
The perpetrators, potential money launderers, proceed as follows: They usually place job advertisements in which they are looking for so-called financial agents who will lure the fraudsters with easy money. In return for an expense allowance, the financial agents should make their private bank accounts available for deposits. They should then forward the deposited funds to unknown third parties. In doing so, the financial agents are – without perhaps knowing it – taking part in a money laundering transfer and are committing a criminal offense.
In some cases, the perpetrators specifically target young people in order to abuse them for their schemes.
The police warn
The police warn urgently against making your own bank account available to strangers! Signs of a money laundering attempt can include:
- Ads in newspapers or on the Internet are searched for through business partners who provide their account and contact details in return for a high commission
- Job advertisements from foreign companies that are looking for test buyers, for example, but who end up being used as financial agents
- Emails from credit institutions asking for account details and passwords
- Tenants who accept high deposits and want to have them transferred abroad after terminating their apartment
- Large sums of cash when buying and selling
When buyers make larger cash deposits, they offer to pay the purchase price in tranches of less than EUR 15,000 so that the seller can deposit the amount into different accounts. The aim of these splits is to bypass the credit institutions' security systems.
