Fingerprint locks are being tested: the “Joy-It” bicycle lock for €56, the padlock from “Abus” for around €47 and the door lock from “Sorex” for just under €200.

The handling test

We start by installing the bike lock. To do this, the finger must be placed on the sensor ten times in total. There was a bit of a problem at first, but after a short time we got the hang of it - the fingerprint was recognized and saved. The padlock and door lock perform better. Here too, the finger must be placed on the sensor several times. It works straight away for both of them, we are satisfied. The door lock must also be installed in the door. The cylinder can be adjusted depending on the thickness of the door, installation is uncomplicated and the lock is installed in a very short time.

Which fingerprint lock is the most reliable?

The manufacturers of all three locks guarantee that several different fingerprints can be stored and recognized. We want to check this and ask ten people to register. All of the test locks perform well here - all stored people are recognized and all unknown persons are denied unlocking. All three produce incorrect scans, but the door lock produces the least overall. If your fingers are dirty, only the locking cylinder will recognize the person unlocking it, and if your hands are wet, all three will fall through.

Test: Which fingerprint lock is the most secure?

The door lock and padlock have the battery compartment and thus the electrical system installed unsecured on the outside of the smart locks - good for quickly changing the batteries, bad for security. Any person can use this to open the battery compartment and thus gain access to the circuit, modify it and “hack” it.

The bike lock performs worse. It has a built-in battery and therefore also has a keyhole. Thieves are in for a treat, as they can unlock the lock within a very short space of time.

If the locks are stolen without being damaged, it is important to prove to the insurance company that an unauthorized third party was at work. This could be done with an event memory, i.e. a memory that records who gained access and when - a function that we miss in all three.

Conclusion: This is the best fingerprint lock

In terms of handling as well as reliability, all tested variants performed well - the locking cylinder stands out, as it is the only one that works even with dirty fingers. In the safety test, the “Joy-It” emerged as a clear loser. In terms of security, it does not differ from conventional locks due to the additional keyhole. But the locks from “Abus” and “Sorex” can also be cracked with a little know-how and therefore probably need revision by the manufacturers.
