Shortly before the turn of the year, a video from 2018 made the rounds on Facebook showing a dog lying on the ground shaking.

The video itself dates back to 2018 and was shared on Facebook by the owner Fiona MacFarlane from Scotland. With this video the owner wanted to show how much your dog or animals can suffer from fireworks.

Her dog was lying on the ground, shaking and so frightened that he could barely move. The reason for sharing the video again is probably the upcoming New Year! The video itself was also published by BBC Scotland in 2018 and has been viewed over 33 million times!

Her video shows how bad this can be for animals: “That’s only 36 seconds of it,” the owner writes on Facebook. The anxiety attack itself lasted more than an hour. “ I filmed him at the start of his panic attack, then put a blanket over him and put a bed next to him.

Anke from the Mimikama team, who a veterinarian , was also able to confirm this to us. She often has dogs in her practice that also have similar reactions.

New Year's Eve with a dog! What now? How to deal with rockets and firecrackers?

Our dogs have four times better hearing than humans, so loud noises cause stress for the animals anyway. There are also many colorful lights. Dogs can't understand where the bang comes from - and why everyone is suddenly cheering. This simply scares many dogs.

What can you do?

It is important not to calm or pet the animal excessively, as this increases the fear (“Master has to calm me down, so something is really wrong here!”). However, comforting is expressly permitted.

New Year's Eve checklist for dogs

  • Always keep your dog on a leash, because firecrackers can cause problems.
  • Allow yourself to eat a large portion in the evening - a full stomach means less anxiety.
  • Darken the room (blinds down, curtains closed)
  • Keep dog walks short; last round around 8 p.m
  • Query secure commands – that provides security.
  • Social Support: Stroking, physical contact and reassurance are expressly permitted.
  • If you are very scared: go to the vet in time to get medication (with the animal)
  • For smaller scaredy cats: eggnog – after consultation with the vet (no joke!)
  • Under no circumstances should you administer acepromazine (trade names Calmivet, Prequillan, Relaquine, Sedalin, Tranquigel, Tranquiline, Vetranquil).
  • Cover ears with cotton wool if the dog allows it.
  • Stay calm yourself – fear transmits itself!
  • Go to the country and avoid the crowds.
  • Don't leave the dog alone!
  • Calm, regular noises or music (like a puppy) will calm you down
  • Tellington touch
