There are a lot of things you have to think about before and when moving into your first apartment: Where and how quickly do I have to register? Who do I have to inform about my move? What insurance do I need? And: What about important contracts such as electricity, telephone and internet contracts? Are they moving with you and how do I find new, cheap contracts?
The consumer advice centers give tips on finding accommodation and moving:
- Planning a budget
Only those who know their monthly budget and what monthly funds are available can specifically look for an affordable place to stay. - Planning your apartment search
Should it be a shared apartment or an apartment with more peace and quiet and your own bathroom? - Calculate additional costs
In addition to the rent, additional costs such as gas, electricity and house cleaning must also be paid. Rent and additional costs are always due promptly at the beginning of the month. - Provisions for the additional costs bill
The additional costs bill is made once a year. Sometimes the advance payment is not enough and the difference has to be paid later. - Concluding contracts
Before concluding an internet contract, prices should be compared, for example on brokerage portals, in order to find a cheap provider and tariff. - Choosing insurance
Accidents happen and something quickly falls onto the edge of the shower or the sink in your rented apartment and causes damage. Or if the tub overflows and the water drips into the apartment below, that can be expensive. Liability insurance can help here. - Broadcasting fee
The broadcasting fee must be paid for each apartment. Anyone who receives Bafög can be exempted. In a shared apartment everyone shares the amount. - Going to the office
Registration at the residents' registration office must be done within two weeks of moving in. A certificate from the landlord or the rental agreement must be presented here. If the deadline is missed, a fine may be due. - Subscription proceed carefully
The costs of newspaper subscriptions and streaming services should also be taken into account in the household budget. - Planning moving day
Borrowed moving boxes save money, friends who help make a moving company unnecessary. Don't forget: If necessary, apply for a special permit for parking in good time.
