A 21-year-old Russian soldier was sentenced to life in prison in the first Ukrainian war crimes trial After the man confessed, the court in Kiev considered it proven that the tank soldier shot an unarmed 62-year-old civilian . This was the first case to go to trial following the global horror at Russian atrocities in Ukraine. The accused now has 30 days to file an appeal. The verdict is not yet final.

The public prosecutor had requested life imprisonment. The defense pleaded for acquittal because the soldier carried out an order .
