Do such fish really exist and if so, is it a mutation?

We received inquiries about a status post on Facebook that showed a very bizarre creature.

In the short video and also in the photos, you can see a fish that supposedly has a double mouth:

The post has already been shared over 185,000 times in just four days - a comment about the fish only consists of the abbreviation “WTH???” (What the hell = English for what the hell) – does this fish really exist, is this just ordinary click-bait or are they trying to make us believe this is a hoax?

The fact check

Many things in nature happen because some gene in the genome has a defect.

This is why Siamese twins, one-armed, one-legged or other deformed creatures are created.

But there are also accidents, misfortunes or other phenomena that make living beings look different than they should actually look.

The fish pictured here is an Asian carp. These have their eyes set low on and in their heads anyway. The supposed second “eyes” pictured here are actually nostrils.

But with this fish and its second mouth, it is more likely a previous injury that led to the creation of the mouth.

The injury to the throat can be caused by a malformation in the gill area or by a cut in the mouth area.

The reason for this may be a fish hook that has not been removed. The fish then tore open the bottom area because of the hook. Normally these fish no longer have a chance of surviving in their natural habitat because they end up as prey for predators. But he somehow managed to survive and now he's probably too big or too old - or he's just been lucky so far.

Nevertheless, no mutation can be ruled out in this case either, as nature's possibilities are immeasurable here too.

As a comparison, you can look at the “scary fish” from Russia here.

According to RTL, also has two mouths, but separately from each other.

There was also a roach with two mouths , of which a user from the “Fisch und Fang” forum, a well-known fishing magazine, uploaded a photo. Here too, two mouths could be seen, the origin of which was probably an injury to the mouth.

Result:

The fish, the video and also the photos are real.

However, it is not possible to say exactly whether it is a mutation caused by nature or whether the fish was simply unlucky and the second mouth appeared due to an accident.

However, the fact is that in nature you don't have to be afraid of creatures you don't know, as nature is always making environmental adjustments to its creatures and researchers have not yet discovered all life forms in the sea.
