Twitter is planning so-called “Fleets” that self-destruct online after 24 hours.

It's not just WhatsApp that is upgrading temporary visible content. Twitter is also now putting a new option for tweets in the spotlight – fleets.

The new fleets are automatically deleted after 24 hours and cannot be retweeted or liked. If you want to respond to a fleet, you can only do so via direct message and not in the public timeline.

As product boss Kayvon Keykpour explained at the global launch on Tuesday, the idea behind it is to take away the fear of tweeting from users who are still hesitant. The feature has already been tested in Brazil, Italy, India and South Korea. This showed that people who are new to Twitter or who tweet very rarely responded particularly well to the format.

For now, fleets are only available in the Twitter app and are displayed in bubbles above the timeline. Busy social media users are already familiar with this display from Instagram stories and other apps.

Speaking of stories...

In general, the function is very reminiscent of Snapchat's Stories, which have already been copied by social media giants like Facebook.

By the way: The made-up word “Fleets” stands for “fleeting tweets” – in German “fleeting tweets”. Sounds logical somewhere, right?

Twitter is also experimenting beyond its classic formats such as the now 280 long text posts. Such as spoken tweets and direct voice messages.
