Flour and oil are on the shopping list, but the shelves in many supermarkets are often empty at the moment. Flour was already in high demand in 2020, but was probably undefeated by toilet paper. In 2022 we will also have to deal with panic buying and delivery bottlenecks.
Because of the war in Ukraine, people are increasingly stocking up on food. And some of these products in particular are experiencing delivery bottlenecks due to the Ukraine conflict. Some supermarkets responded by streamlining the purchase of products. Only a certain amount per person can be purchased here, reports TZ .
However, a supermarket chain is now resorting to more drastic methods, which is causing an outcry on social media.
Price surcharge when purchasing flour
On social media platforms, you often come across a photo of a supermarket shelf with a note for shoppers on it. post with this photo has received over 90,000 likes on Facebook and been shared over 12,000 times.
"Danger!!!
Text on the noticeboard in the supermarket
Price for Every Day Flour: 1st pack €0.39
2nd pack €2
from the 3rd pack €5.
We donate the difference between €0.39 and the (sic!) “surcharge” to aid organizations for Ukraine.
It counts per household and not per person. We ask you to refrain from further discussions about this!”
In another post on Facebook you can see a second notice:
“You only need flour and oil?
Text on the noticeboard in the supermarket
No problem then you pay an additional €5.
We donate these to aid organizations for Ukraine.”
The second photo here also reveals which supermarket chain this is. The “Markant” logo can be seen here at the top right.
Markant markets can be found in northwest Germany and belong to Bünting AG. The photo of this notice comes from a Markant market in Herford, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The reactions to this action are different. Some users like them. Others want to be able to decide for themselves whether to donate or not. Still others criticize that this surcharge disadvantages larger families or households with several people.
Conclusion
The notice is real and was put up in a Markant market in Herford.
Unfortunately, TZ did not receive any information when it attempted to contact the relevant Markant branch because the branch manager was not present.
When asked, the Bünting AG press office stated that it was not aware of this notice in one of its Markant stores.
