Conventionally produced food has currently become significantly more expensive - partly because the costs of fertilizer and transport have increased. Things are somewhat different with organic products that do not require chemical fertilizers: they have not become as expensive.
Savings tip 1: Shop seasonally
It's currently harvest time in the southwest.
The more regional, the less transport, energy and storage costs drive up the price. In order to avoid having to throw away as little or nothing as possible, you should keep a close eye on what food you already have at home.
Especially if you don't have much space for supplies, it's worth buying only what you need and using them consistently. A weekly menu plan helps when shopping: you can plan the dishes for the week based on special offers.
Saving tip 2: Low-fat products are cheaper
Low-fat dairy products are cheaper. When it comes to yoghurt, large cups can be worth it. Butter – which has become around 40 percent more expensive – can easily be replaced with vegetable fats such as margarine or oil.
The cheapest products are usually found in the so-called Bück zone, the lower shelves in the supermarket. In our example, the cheapest oil is actually particularly healthy: rapeseed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and costs half as much as sunflower oil.
Saving tip 3: Food sharing
If you don't mind a few quirks, you can get food particularly cheaply. Depending on where you live, there are various options: food sharing groups, rescue markets or apps like “Too good to go”. Here, restaurants and shops offer leftover goods after work for less money.
Savings tip 4: Storage
Tomatoes ripen at home and actually get better and better. If you put them in the fridge, the ripening process will stop. The same goes for cucumbers. Zucchini and kohlrabi go in the vegetable drawer in the fridge - without leaves, mind you, so they stay fresh longer.
It is particularly cold above - sausages and meat are stored here. Dairy products come in the middle. It's best to store leftovers from the day before and cheese at the top. The door is the warmest place. Drinks and butter are stored here. To prevent dry products such as lentils and soy granules from being attacked by food moths, they should be poured into airtight jars.
