The claim

Football commentator Uli Köhler apparently says the N-word on Sky Sport.

Our conclusion

Both the broadcaster and Uli Köhler himself made it clear that he meant “abnicker”, i.e. yes man.

You can hear word for word in the video that was distributed: “ They were probably afraid that Gianni Infantino and his compliant [N-word?] at FIFA would then issue the next sanction .” The video can be seen in various tweets:

Many users agreed in the comments that Uli Köhler appeared to use the N-word in his comment.

It should probably be called (Ab-)Nicker

As the video became more and more viral, football commentator Uli Köhler and Sky Sport also became aware of the linguistic faux pas. The broadcaster responded directly to one of the video's disseminators on Twitter:

"Hello everyone! @Sky_Uli was just as shocked as we and some of you were when he saw and heard the video. Uli wanted to say “abnicker” (i.e. yes-man). Which makes sense in the context of what he said.”

Uli Köhler himself also addressed the audience with a short video and explained himself:

“Hey guys, I was shocked myself when I saw my video, you could really understand that. But it was about Infantino and his jokes .

Everything else makes no sense at all in terms of content. Apart from the fact that this completely contradicts my views. If anyone misunderstood: sorry again.”

Some argue that this would make sense in terms of content, since in casual language “willing yes-men/slaves” could also be referred to with the N-word. But this would actually contradict Uli Köhler's generally professional appearance as a football commentator.

Also interesting: “After FIFA’s blatant interference with freedom of expression, the DFB decides to leave the World Cup in Qatar,” were the introductory words to the national team’s departure.
Is the German national team really leaving in protest?
