The claim
Apparently Franklin D. Roosevelt made this statement. This quote is often used by conspiracy supporters to describe current events.
Our conclusion
There is no evidence that Roosevelt ever said these words. However, this “cuckoo quote” has been circulating since at least 1971.
This quote, said to come from Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, is often used in connection with all sorts of events. Be it climate change, the corona pandemic or the energy crisis. Politicians are therefore suspected of having planned everything well in advance.
Did this quote actually come from Roosevelt?
The quote that is often used can also be found on numerous quote sites.
And it is always attributed to Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is often used on social media to put the stamp of conspiracy on current events.

Cuckoo quote
But like a cuckoo's egg, something is being falsely implied here. There is no evidence that Roosevelt ever uttered these words.
The American Presidency Project , a database of official presidential documents, collects all public statements made by American presidents. In a note here you can read that before 1945 documents of orders and proclamations were not publicly available. This explains why the collection is somewhat smaller than in subsequent years.
3,111 documents by and about Franklin D. Roosevelt are archived in this database From speeches to letters you can find everything here. But the quote is not included in any of them.
In the book “Bullspotting, Finding acts in the Age of Misinformation”, author Loren Collins writes that the quote first appears in English in the book “None Dare Call It Conspiracy” and is associated with the US President. This book dates from 1971 and the author wants to expose conspiracies that were controlled or orchestrated by governments. also uses the alleged quote on his website
Two other blogs that deal with fake news and quote research have also dealt with the president's alleged words. Metabunk site concluded that this quote did not come from Franklin Roosevelt, as did Quote Research .
Misquoted sentence?
One possibility presented here is a misquoted sentence taken from an actual speech by Roosevelt.
In 1935 the US President said: “We will come back better than ever because we plan it that way. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” A distant similarity can be seen. But whether this may be the original source of the misquote is difficult to prove and is a bit far-fetched due to the missing part that nothing happens by chance.
Conclusion
The quote “In politics, nothing happens by chance. If it does happen, it was planned that way.” is incorrectly attributed to Franklin D. Roosevelt. It cannot be proven that he made this statement.
