Everyone loves a bargain. And when it comes to saving money on our daily commute by train, many of us quickly listen up. But what if the supposed bargain not only costs your money, but also your security? Join us on a journey through the dark alleys of online ticket fraud and find out how you can protect yourself.
The scam with tempting offers for train tickets
Gone are the days when you could only buy train tickets at the counter or machine. Today there are numerous providers on the Internet who promise great bargains. An ICE subscription on the most popular route for a fraction of the official price? That sounds too good to be true. And often it is.
The perfidious system behind the fraud
Imagine you come across a tempting offer online: a ticket subscription for just 100 euros instead of the regular 271 euros. Hoping to be able to travel with a valid subscription soon, contact the provider and provide your personal details. But then a perfidious trick happens: The fraudster uses a third party's data, which he obtained through other criminal activities, orders the ticket in your name, collects the money and leaves you and the third party out in the cold.
Victims and Consequences: A Double Game
This double game results in two people falling into the trap: the unsuspecting person whose details were used to order and you, the buyer of the supposed bargain. While the first one has to deal with the bank and the train, you run the risk of getting caught and having to pay high fines every time you travel. Not to mention, you've paid money to a scammer that you'll likely never see again.
How do you protect yourself from such scams?
Caution is advised here. Beware of offers that sound too good to be true. Make sure the provider is legitimate before sending them any personal information or money. Stick to official sales outlets and avoid private sales, especially if they are made over the Internet.
Conclusion: A supposed bargain can be expensive
The world of the Internet is full of opportunities – but also full of risks. The tempting prospect of a cheap train ticket or subscription can quickly turn into a nightmare. Be informed, be vigilant. And don't let yourself be seduced by supposed bargains. Because there is often more to it than just good business.
