Last month there was a special form of fraud in which the perpetrators mixed two different scams. An elderly man was contacted repeatedly over the phone and in person, initially promising him a supposed prize.

Cunning fraudsters use promises of prizes and false police identities

The fraudsters were particularly clever: First, they promised the man that he had won a competition. In order to receive the winnings, however, he must first transfer money. After this initial contact, another scammer called, posing as a police officer. He urged the man to hand over his savings to someone who supposedly collected money.

It was only when the man was contacted again and informed about an alleged win that he became suspicious and informed his family. They discovered the fraud and forwarded the case to the police.

Looking for witnesses

The police are now looking for witnesses who may have seen a suspicious man. This was around May 17th. on Margaretenstrasse in Recklinghausen. He is described as being around 30 years old, slim and tall. He didn't have a beard. It is possible that the suspect was traveling alone or with someone.

The criminal police have started investigating and are now trying to put a stop to the fraudsters. She hopes for information from the public that could lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators.

At this point we would like to emphasize once again how important it is to be vigilant when making such contacts. If in doubt, you should always contact a trustworthy person or the police directly. Do not give out personal information or money to strangers and be especially careful if asked to transfer money.
