Users repeatedly fall into the trap of cyber criminals. The police are warning of current incidents involving fake shop fraud and CEO fraud.

The Internet offers fraudsters many opportunities to trap users. Be it through a fake shop or CEO fraud. The Heidekreis police warn of current incidents:

Heidekreis: In November and December 2019, a large number of citizens contacted the Heidekreis police station after they had made transfers to foreign accounts for a supposed bargain in a fake or imitated online shop and ultimately did not receive any goods.

A subsequent cancellation of the bookings was not possible in any of the cases; in some cases there was significant financial damage. This phenomenon, called “fake shop fraud” , occurs especially in the weeks before the Christmas holidays, but online shops with discounts of up to 90% on current and sought-after goods, suspicious imprints or dubious payment options are on the Internet all year round to find.

Companies in the focus of fraudsters

With the start of the new year, the perpetrators are increasingly focusing on companies that have been exposed “CEO fraud” Employees of local companies with financial authority received emails whose senders were manipulated by the perpetrator so that they appeared to have been created by the management (CEO).

The recipient should treat the email with absolute confidentiality, as it concerns a secret company takeover, a still secret major order or something similar. For this campaign, a large amount of money urgently needs to be transferred - often abroad. Due to the attention of the employees and their knowledge of the phenomenon, there has been no financial damage so far.
