A 26-year-old falls victim to a so-called love scam.

He met a 26-year-old French woman on a dating app. After a short while she asks him for money. First of all, so that she could buy food. A little later to pay for her daughter's operation. The 26-year-old gradually transfers his entire savings to her, totaling a four-figure amount. She promises him that he will get the money back.

When she then repeatedly asked for additional amounts of money, the 26-year-old became suspicious, broke off contact and reported the incident to the police.

When it comes to so-called love scamming, the scam is always similar:

The perpetrators fake true feelings towards the victims they contact, solely with the aim of receiving money.

How do I behave if I have been cheated on?

  • Break off contact and use the options available to block a scammer.
  • If you have already responded to the fraudsters' demands, they will be very persistent: therefore, consistently ignore any further attempts to contact them.
  • Save all correspondence with the fraudsters and keep all transfer receipts etc.
  • Contact your police in confidence and file a criminal complaint.

How to protect yourself

  • Do not transfer money to people you do not know or have never met or seen in person, or make any other demands.
  • Always be suspicious of incredible offers, whether when looking for an apartment or a partner.
  • Enter the name of your internet acquaintance with the addition “Scammer” into Google, for example. In many cases, the search engine can confirm suspicions.
  • If you are scammed: Stop all contact immediately, whether by email or telephone. It's best to get a new email address and telephone number.
  • If you have suffered financial loss, be sure to file a criminal complaint with the police.
