Scammers are currently making calls pretending to be police officers and telling them something about a break-in right down the street from where the person they called lives. The fraudsters then asked for cash and valuables. “Scammers are once again at work here. Do not collect and/or hand over money!” Since the calls are expected to continue today, the police are again warning about the fraudsters on the phone. In addition, those affected could have already fallen for the fraud during the night and handed over money or valuables or are on the way to the bank.
So far, the police know of five people between the ages of 60 and 86. The calls in the Marburg urban area came in on the night of Wednesday, April 26th, between 11 p.m. and 4:10 a.m.
The fraudsters proceeded in the following way: An alleged chief sergeant / Commissioner BUCHMANN from the Marburg criminal police informed them that a break-in had just taken place on the street where the people called and that several members of a gang of burglars were on the run. They're trying to arrest them now. The caller then asked about valuables and cash and which bank you were a customer of. If the potential victims had doubts, the caller used a beep to simulate a connection to the police, whereupon a second voice confirmed the authenticity of the chief sergeant / inspector BUCHMANN.
Tips from the police to avoid becoming a victim of telephone scammers
- First of all, hang up if you are talking about money or general assets or personal information on the phone.
- Be vigilant and suspicious and talk to someone you trust before you even think about withdrawing cash, transferring money or handing over assets!
- Don't let yourself be put under pressure on the phone! Don't believe every story you hear when you get an unexpected call.
- Never reveal confidential information.
- Authorities and reputable companies do not operate in this form.
- Please call back. However, never use phone numbers that are given to you or that you see on the display (they could be fake). Choose consciously! Do not use the callback button!
- Dial the emergency number 110 yourself or the landline number of the responsible police, which you can find in the telephone book or via the Internet.
