Various scams are known. A warning appears out of nowhere on the PC screen and a voice from the loudspeaker explains that the computer is infected with viruses. To avoid greater damage, the consumer should dial the number provided. Frightened and completely taken by surprise, he follows the request and calls. Using a remote control program, the supposed Microsoft employee connects to the consumer's computer. Allegedly infected files are retrieved and removed.

Now the bank account may also be affected, which is why it also needs to be checked. The consumer then, unsettled, enters his or her bank account access details. Finally, the fraudsters get the TAN under false pretenses. The result: The fraudsters deduct a total of 3,000 euros from the account. However, the person concerned only notices this after they have ended the four-hour phone call. His bank can refund him 1,000 euros, but the debit from his credit card account cannot be reversed.

Tips from the consumer advice center: How to act correctly in the event of suspicious incidents

“The fact that a warning sign suddenly appears on the PC and a strange voice sounds can be attributed to certain malware. This can sometimes get onto the computer while surfing - for example when an infected fake shop is accessed," explains Sabine Oppen-Schröder, consultant at the consumer advice center in Lüneburg. Unfortunately, criminals often gain access to private and highly sensitive data. “They cleverly exploit the moment of shock and create pressure so that the victims can no longer think clearly.”

In such cases, however, it is so important to remain calm and not give out any personal information. Even if it is difficult, consumers should not be unsettled by supposed warnings in the browser or by audio recordings that suddenly play, advises Oppen-Schröder. The same applies to emails, attachments or third-party software that are intended to help resolve a possible virus infection: do not respond, do not open and do not download.

Anyone who has come into contact with such attempted fraud should report it to the police - regardless of whether any damage was caused or not. If you suspect that malware has been installed, it is best for those affected to have their computer checked by an IT specialist.
