On July 6th, 2023 between 9:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., telephone fraudsters were up to mischief in the Bad Godesberg area.
In several phone calls with a 90-year-old lady, they pretended to be employees of the State Criminal Police Office and told the fictitious story of several break-ins in the neighborhood of the person they were calling and the “investigative finding” that a note had been found on two arrested suspects from a large Romanian gang , on which her address is also noted.
As the crime progressed, the crook duo finally convinced the senior citizen that it was now important to secure her assets. The victim ended up depositing gold coins in a cloth bag under a car parked in front of the house. In this context, the perpetrators pointed out by telephone that the shutters facing the street definitely had to be lowered. The “collectors” finally grabbed the prey unnoticed and left undetected. A final call from the fraudsters finally signaled to the injured party that “everything is now safe.”
After the report was filed, the responsible KK 24 took over the further investigation into the case.
The police warn and advise
- Fraudsters pose as relatives or officials and make shock calls reporting alleged traffic accidents or claiming that a break-in is imminent and the police need their help.
- Be suspicious of all calls - healthy suspicion is not rude!
- Call your alleged relative back on a number you know and make sure that there is actually an emergency.
- Do not provide any information about your family or financial circumstances over the telephone. The real police do not ask you over the phone about the cash or valuables you have at home or in the bank - even during urgent investigations.
Notice
From current police investigations it is known that telephone fraudsters are increasingly using personal data that they filter out of current obituaries to prepare their crimes!
Never hand over money or valuables to strangers. End the call - simply hang up the receiver or press the corresponding button on the phone. Immediately inform the police via 110 by dialing the police emergency number yourself after hanging up. Also confide in family members or friends.
Spreading the word helps stop fraudsters
This warning is specifically aimed not only at older people, but also at the younger generation. To make life as difficult as possible for the fraudsters and to further intensify the investigation into the crimes, help the police by warning friends and relatives about the fraud schemes. Use your networks to draw attention to the crimes.
After such an incident, the Bonn police's senior citizen advisory service offers those affected and their relatives advice in a personal conversation and, if necessary, further information material. the prevention office by phone on 0228 15-7676 or by email at seniorenberatung.bonn@polizei.nrw.de More tips to protect yourself from shock calls: HERE
