“Secure payment”: Please be careful
A 72-year-old senior woman from Sprockhövel advertised various items for sale on eBay classifieds. A buyer suggested interest last Monday (August 29) and sent a link where the seller should provide her credit card details in order to complete the sale as quickly as possible. Further processes followed via SMS and WhatsApp, in which similar links for the payment process were sent. However, the woman from Sprockhövel noticed the fraud and blocked both her access data and the credit card before any property damage could occur.
The “Secure Payment” scam
In this scam, fraudsters use the “secure payment” payment method to extract sensitive payment data from their victims. The perpetrators send fake emails, so-called phishing emails, or appear as a trustworthy person on social networks. You want to force recipients to reveal personal data such as login details, passwords, transaction numbers, etc. Internet fraudsters lure their victims with fake emails and lead them to professionally designed websites. They should enter their access data there.
The initial Ebay classifieds chat continues via the cell phone number via SMS or WhatsApp. Even the verification codes (if 2-factor authentication is set) to activate the payment are sent via SMS. The third-party payments can therefore be carried out by the fraudsters without any problems.
