Cybertrading – in German electronic trading or internet trading – includes all buying and selling processes that take place online. The transactions are carried out largely automatically and corresponding investments can generate good profits.
Unfortunately, among the numerous offers on the Internet you will not only find reputable companies, but also fraudsters who are up to mischief here. These attract attention with targeted online marketing and promise extremely high returns.
This is how the scam works
The scam usually goes like this: Alleged financial advisors persuade their private “clients” to make supposedly risk-free and extremely lucrative investments, which are often related to cryptocurrencies (e.g. Bitcoin). First, you start by depositing an amount in the low three-digit range and show how the investment supposedly increases significantly in a very short space of time. As the process progresses, larger and larger sums of money are deposited, but these are never actually invested in the company. The “support” of the fraud victims is carried out by call center employees who are often specially trained in manipulating people.
The financial damage suffered by the respective victims is immense and can even threaten their existence. This is also the case in a current case in which a 64-year-old from the Gotha district was cheated out of a sum in the lower six-figure range.
The police therefore warn against this crime phenomenon:
- Be suspicious if you are promised incredibly high profits for an investment.
- Do not allow purported brokers to remotely access your computer or smartphone using appropriate apps.
- Before making a financial investment, research the respective company or provider thoroughly.
- Make your relatives aware of this topic too.
