Yesterday (September 22nd), a 61-year-old from Burscheid filed a police report after falling victim to fraud over the last few days. Exactly a week earlier, the man was contacted by phone for the first time by the fraudster, who posed as an employee of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority.

The unknown person told the injured party that he could reimburse him a large sum of money that he had lost in an internet fraud about a year ago.

Already fallen victim to fraudsters

What was the Burscheider's downfall:
a year ago he actually fell victim to a Bitcoin fraud. At that time, he was supposed to first pay taxes on an alleged Bitcoin profit so that the profit could be paid out. The 61-year-old lost a total amount in the lower five-figure range.

In the current case, the Burscheid resident gave the fraudster third-party access to his computer and cell phone and had to watch as a stranger made several transfers via his online banking portal. As a result, the man suffered further damage in the upper four-digit range.

The Rhein-Berg police warn urgently against such and similar scams. Never give strangers access to your digital devices, even if they supposedly legitimize themselves by sending them alleged employee ID cards. Also, check to see if their phone number can be found in a printed local or digital phone book. If you don't think this is necessary, try having your phone provider remove the entry.
