As our cooperation partner reports, fake A1 emails are currently on the way that collect credit card details!

Countless consumers in Austria contact our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet with fake A1 emails. Apparently 72.77 euros were debited too much in the last statement. In order to get the money back, a refund application should be filled out. Those affected must not do this under any circumstances, otherwise all credit card data will end up in the hands of criminals!

It is not inconceivable that an error might occur when debiting a mobile phone bill, which is why the following fake A1 message may appear credible:

Screenshot of the fake email

The email as text:

Hello,
we are sorry to inform you that after the last calculation we discovered that you were incorrectly charged €72.77.
We invite you to:
Complete a refund request
Kind regards

In the fraudulent email, criminals tell you that an excessive amount was debited from the last billing. In order to get the money back, you should fill out a refund application.

Fake A1 website

If you follow the link to fill out a refund application, you will end up on a fake A1 website. The fake is implemented extremely precisely, so you have to pay attention to small details such as the web address or the lack of a login option via the mobile phone number in order to recognize the fake!

Theft of your credit card information

If you follow the instructions on the fake website and log in, you will land on a page to enter your credit card information. If you enter your credit card details here, you will enable the criminal senders of the phishing messages to make purchases using your details. You will not receive any money because the excessive debits never occurred.

How to recognize the phishing message

In this case, both the fake email and the fake website are implemented extremely realistically, making detection more difficult than in some other cases. Nevertheless, there are clear indications of attempted fraud:

  • The email supposedly comes from “My A1-Telekom”. However, if you take a closer look at the sender address, you will notice that the message comes from a Hotmail address.
  • There was never an overcharge. The best way to check this is to log into your customer account in the usual way, without following a link in the message.
  • You will not be addressed personally.
  • The link does not take you to “a1.net” but to the fake website “a1telekom-at.net”

Have you fallen into the trap?

Immediately inform your credit card company that your credit card information has been stolen and have it blocked accordingly. If damage has already occurred, a police report may also be necessary.

Also change your password at A1, as you have also given this to the criminals.
