Fraudsters – Case 1: Fake call from the bank

On Monday afternoon, November 14, 2022, a Gelsenkirchen resident in Buer received a call from his bank. At least he thought it was his bank when his bank advisor's number flashed on his phone display around 12:30 p.m. However, a supposed colleague of his bank advisor then answered the phone. He informed the 70-year-old that the Gelsenkirchen resident's account had been hacked and transfers had been made. The pretend bank advisor then asked the Gelsenkirchener's password on the receiver to stop the transfers.

In fact, it was only by providing the password that the fraudster was able to carry out the actual transfers, as it later turned out. After two fake police officers, some of whom had Gelsenkirchen phone numbers, called the 70-year-old by phone and asked him to download something onto his cell phone, the man became suspicious and contacted the real police. The fraud was discovered there, so the man immediately called his bank and was still able to cancel the bookings he had already made.

Case 2: Fake call from a doctor

Also on Monday, around 12 p.m., a 93-year-old wearing Bulmke cases was contacted by fraudsters. During the phone call, the unknown person on the receiver pretended to be a doctor from a hospital in Essen. He claimed that the Gelsenkirchen man's nephew was in the intensive care unit and needed an infusion that was vital and at the same time expensive. The 93-year-old was willing to give the doctor a sum of money in cash if he could speak to his nephew first. In fact, the receiver was passed on and the supposed nephew spoke to the Gelsenkirchen resident. Convinced of this, the 93-year-old handed a sum of money to a stranger at the door around 1 p.m.

The suspect who picked up the money was around 35 years old, around 1.80 meters tall, had a full build, was wearing a black surgical mask and a black hat, as well as a long black coat and black trousers and black trousers Shoes. Anyone who can provide information about the suspect is asked to call the police at the Criminal Investigation Department 12 on 0209 365 7212 or at the Criminal Investigation Department on 0209 365 8240.

The police continue to ask that you handle data and money sensitively towards strangers.

Before you give out relevant data without reason, i.e. not out of your own intention, make sure that you can trust the caller and his intentions by calling the relevant institutions or friends and relatives. If in doubt, call the emergency number at any time on 110. Also, do not hand cash to strangers at the front door. We also ask you to continue to sensitize parents, grandparents and neighbors to these dangers in the future. It's better to talk about these scams more than not enough.
