An increasing number of concerned citizens are currently reporting to the police because they receive an email threatening that their data will be published because the unknown people have the citizens' passwords. These passwords are listed in the email and are usually correct. The perpetrators also claim to have access to the computers' cameras and microphones based on the passwords. The perpetrators demand 400 euros in Bitcoins.
From a technical point of view, it is not possible to gain access to a home computer, including the camera or microphone, using just an email password.
This is a targeted phishing attack, as numerous user logins are published on many platforms every day. There is a lot of speculation here about people's psyches, and the password is intended to exacerbate the situation. However, no further personalized information (i.e. evidence of access) is provided by the unknown persons because no access took place.
Tips for correct behavior:
- Change passwords instantly
- Do not respond to any demands for money
- Any reporting to the police
- If no report is filed, the email can also be deleted
