On Thursday, April 14, 2022, a senior citizen received a call from scammers. During the course of the crime, they posed as a lawyer, public prosecutor and a fake police officer and said that the elderly woman's daughter had culpably killed a person in a traffic accident.

The daughter will be taken into custody unless a deposit of 90,000 euros and damages of 75,000 euros are paid.

This story was of course fictional. In this way, the perpetrators managed to put the senior citizen and an acquaintance who was present under so much pressure over several hours that the two women did not immediately see through the fraud. The acquaintance was also convinced by the perpetrators and offered to help the senior citizen raise the money they demanded.

At around 2:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the sports center on Hühnerbergstrasse in Memmingen, the senior woman handed over jewelry worth around 30,000 euros in a plastic container to one of the perpetrators. He is said to have been around 185 cm tall, around 35 years old, slim and inconspicuous. The person approached on foot and then left again.

The senior woman's acquaintance was directed to Lindau by the perpetrators. Between 5:10 p.m. and 5:35 p.m., she handed over approximately 95,000 euros in an envelope to one of the perpetrators in the parking lot of the Lidl hypermarket on Kemptener Strasse. The person is said to have been over 180 cm tall, dark-haired and possibly of Eastern European origin. In addition, the person was wearing an FFP2 mask, a blue “bomber jacket” and dark jeans. She approached the location on foot and had a tattoo on the back of her neck.

Only after the jewelry and money were handed over did the injured parties have doubts about the story presented and they decided to file a complaint.

The criminal police inspectorate is urgently asking the public for information. Who made relevant observations at the locations where the money was handed over? The Memmingen criminal police will receive information on 08331/100-0.

The police strongly advise:

• Never give information about financial circumstances over the telephone; Authorities do not ask you to hand over cash in this way.

• Inform family members and neighbors about the perpetrators' actions.

• You will not receive calls from the emergency number 110.

• If you receive such a call, hang up and if you have the slightest doubt, call the police emergency number 110.
