In a quiet suburb of Laupheim, around 6:30 p.m., an innocent senior citizen fell victim to a sophisticated fraudster. A stranger rang her doorbell on Biberacher Strasse and brazenly pretended to be an employee of a well-known health insurance company. He cleverly exploited the senior woman's vulnerability to gain access to her trust. What happened next was like a nightmare.

The fraudster claimed to be demanding an outstanding amount of around 2,000 euros on behalf of the nursing care fund. The woman, instinctively suspicious, wanted to contact her daughter first to clarify the matter. But the fraudster was clever and involved the elderly woman in endless conversations to gain time. He even went so far as to fake a phone call with his daughter. Under pressure, the gullible senior citizen finally handed over a small three-digit amount of cash. The impostor triumphed and disappeared.

However, it wouldn't take long for the truth to emerge. After the senior citizen was finally able to make contact with her daughter, she immediately filed a police report. But the search for the fraudster was difficult.

The perpetrator in sight: Who is this fraudster?

The description of the perpetrator is a first starting point for the investigation. The unknown man is estimated to be around 30 to 40 years old, is around 180 cm tall and has short, dark blonde hair. His European appearance and accent-free German make him difficult to identify. At the time of the crime he was wearing a blue polo shirt, dark blue trousers and sporty shoes similar to sneakers.

The police in Laupheim (Tel. 07392/96300) are now looking for this unscrupulous perpetrator and are checking whether he was able to find other victims in Schemmerhofen or the surrounding area. Affected people are urged to contact the police.

An alarming trend: seniors are easy prey

Fraudsters are increasingly targeting seniors who feel safe in their own four walls. The front door becomes an entry ticket into the intimate sphere, where no witnesses can thwart the sinister plans. But fraudsters are versatile actors who play different roles. Sometimes they are business people, sometimes craftsmen, sometimes officials - their creativity knows no bounds.

Protect yourself from fraud at the front door!

The police give clear recommendations to protect yourself from such scams:

  • Don't let strangers into your apartment!
  • Check visitors through the peephole or window before opening the door.
  • Use door intercoms.
  • Never open the apartment door immediately.
  • Call neighbors over or arrange for visitors to come to a later date with someone you trust present.
  • Use official health insurance numbers for verification purposes.
  • If in doubt, always call the police.
