Promise of winnings when you call

On December 2nd, the fraudsters were successful with the scam of the alleged profit in Lüdinghausen.

A 66-year-old woman from Lüdinghausen received a call.
A Mr. Müller claimed that she had won a five-figure amount. In order to receive the money, she should advance a four-digit amount in the form of credit cards to deliver the winnings. The Lüdinghauser woman went to a supermarket and a drugstore and bought them. The fraud was discovered when the 66-year-old asked a cell phone store employee to help her transmit the codes. Nevertheless, the financial damage to the woman is in the three-digit range.

The winning call on Friday, December 2nd, 2022 also proved fatal for a 60-year-old man from Erfurt.
The perpetrators suggested to him that he had won almost 50,000 euros in the lottery. To receive the money, he should pay a transport fee of 3,000 euros in prepaid cards. The 60-year-old complied with the request and handed the card codes to the fraudsters over the phone. When he later received a second fraudulent call and his daughter answered the phone, the fraud was discovered. The police opened an investigation into fraud and data spying.

The police advise

  • Be aware: If you haven't taken part in a competition, you can't have won anything!
  • Never spend money to claim a supposed prize, pay any fees or dial special toll numbers (special toll numbers, for example, begin with the area code: 0900…, 0180…,0137…).
  • Do not make any promises over the phone.
  • Never give out personal information : telephone numbers and addresses, account details, sort codes, credit card numbers or anything similar.
  • Ask the caller for the name, address and telephone number of the person responsible, what type of competition it is and what exactly you won. Write down his answers.
