It's the small differences in expression.
The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany says in Article 5:
- (1) Everyone has the right to freely express and disseminate their opinions in word, writing and images and to obtain information without hindrance from generally accessible sources. Freedom of the press and freedom of reporting through radio and film are guaranteed. A censorship does not take place.
- (2) These rights find their limits in the provisions of general laws, the legal provisions for the protection of young people and in the right to personal honor.
- (3) Art and science, research and teaching are free. Freedom of teaching does not release us from loyalty to the constitution.
But freedom of expression does not mean that you can express every abysmal opinion and thought, because freedom of expression has its limits.
The same applies on the Internet and social media as in real life: not everything that pleases is allowed.
Freedom of expression has its limits. It ends, for example, when others are insulted, threatened or denigrated or when violence and attacks are called for. This doesn't always have to have something to do with politics, but of course also applies on a normal interpersonal level.
As a general rule of thumb, you can and should remember: opinions are always allowed as long as they don't offend, slander or incite anyone with them.
