“More and more hate speech against journalists in Europe”
Europe has seen a sharp deterioration in press freedom over the last year. The current rankings for 2018 by Reporters Without Borders clearly show that journalists in European countries are also coming under increasing pressure or are at risk. For example, the murder of journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta last October caused the state to fall a whopping 47 places in the rankings.
There is also an East-West divide within Europe; in particular, countries whose democracy is less stable are more likely to defame journalists. Populist forces in particular were playing with fire here.
Our new ranking of #press freedom shows: In more and more countries #journalists exposed to targeted hate speech - not least in #Europe . https://t.co/OTC7icIuyB pic.twitter.com/tIMQ9BcLfx

Germany in 15th place
Although Germany has moved up one place and is stable within its category, last year there were again a high number of physical attacks, threats and intimidation attempts against journalists, according to Reporters Without Borders. We also recently reported on the Gensing case , in which politicians described the journalist Patrick Gensing as a terrorist and a smear campaign was waged against him.
ROG managing director Christian Mihr explains the results of the ranking, explains in a short video how the list was created and explains why Germany is in 15th place - despite the G20, NetzDG and BND law.
