“Don’t believe a quote just because it’s in a picture on the internet!” – Konrad Adenauer

Admittedly, this quote is easy to debunk because, believe it or not, there was no internet in Konrad Adenauer's time (who was Germany's first chancellor). In fact, quotes from politicians are often falsified if they are believed to make certain statements. But what about these wise words, which are said to come from the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud?

The alleged quote verbatim:

“Before you diagnose yourself with severe depression or low motivation, make sure you aren’t completely surrounded by assholes.”

Numerous sites use this quote and attribute it to Sigmund Freud. But a mention on quote pages and pictures is by no means proof, so let's take a look at the Freud Museum in Vienna!
The museum writes about the quote that although it is attributed to Freud, it has not been proven.

Hmm. That's not enough for us. So we have to dig a little deeper. Very deep. In the depths of the internet we actually find a tweet from 2010 in which these words were written down electronically for the first time, in English:

The original quote, not from Freud

Maybe she just quoted Sigmund Freud but forgot to mention him?
The fact-checkers at “ Quote Investigator ” also wanted to know this and asked four years later, as more and more sites claimed that it was by Sigmund Freud.

So no Freud quote after all

Aha! The inspiration for the phrase came from an ex-boyfriend. So less Freud, more (ex-)boyfriend.
And since when has it been claimed that this came from Siggi Freud?

No, not from Freud

Over a year later, a user on Twitter used the saying, modified it a little and attributed the psychoanalyst to it.
In 2013 it appeared for the first time in German on the Facebook page “ Quotes around the World ”.
