A Freudian slip of the tongue is an audible slip of the tongue in which an actual thought or intention of the speaker is supposedly expressed involuntarily, even though he wanted to say something else. Was George W. Bush also making a similar slip of the tongue when he used the term “Iraq” instead of “Ukraine” when describing an invasion?

Let's look at this sentence and in what context it was said. There is a short video on social media in which former US President George W. Bush can be heard (and seen) giving a speech. The sentence “The decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq” slips out of his mind. “I mean Ukraine.” (One man's decision to launch a completely unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq. I mean Ukraine.) from the lips.

The recording is said to be from a performance on May 18, 2022. Bush reportedly gave the speech during an event at his presidential center at Southern Methodist University. Here is the relevant excerpt:

Bush's slip of the tongue: Not a fake!

Of all people, this slip of the tongue happened to George W. Bush. Bush was US President when the second Iraq War began. A war built on lies. Among other things, the very well-known and false statement that Iraq had mobile chemical weapons laboratories that functioned as chemical and biological weapons laboratories in the form of trucks and were therefore hidden from the UN weapons inspectors ( compare ).

And now Bush speaks of “a decision by one man to launch a completely unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq.” Nothing has been manipulated in the short video. It's not a deepfake or anything like that. He really said it. From the newspaper "Dallasnews.com" we learn that this slip of the tongue took place during his 10-minute speech in which, among other things, Bush compared Zelensky to Winston Churchill and at the same time denounced the increasingly autocratic Russian regime.

In response to his slip of the tongue, he shook his head slightly and immediately corrected himself: “I mean, of Ukraine.” (I mean, in Ukraine). There was absolute silence for a few seconds. Afterwards he shrugged his shoulders and said under his breath: “Iraq too.” In the end there was laughter in the audience after Bush blamed the mistake on his age “Seventyfive”.

Was it a Freudian slip? Did Bush have Iraq and the Iraq War in mind at the exact moment he gave the speech about Ukraine? Does he connect his own past behavior with current events? Of course we don't know that. Perhaps he will comment on the topic himself in the near future.
