There is currently a report making the rounds that a Cologne brewery is removing its fries from the menu. Some users suspect an April Fool's joke, as this is supposed to happen from April 1st, 2022. But that is not the case. This is the brewery and inn “Gaffel am Dom”

According to the industry association Dehoga NRW, the difficulties of the Cologne brewery “Gaffel am Dom” are not an isolated case. “ We have a tense situation in which certain types of cooking oil such as sunflower oil are more difficult to obtain than usual ,” said spokesman Thorsten Hellwig of the dpa. This was also confirmed in a comment on the Facebook page of the “Gaffel am Dom” brewery and inn:

Kölner Brauhaus will be removing fries from its menu from April 1, 2022. The reason: there is no oil for frying.

The reason for the shortage of sunflower and rapeseed oil is the war in Ukraine, where a lot of oil comes from. The situation at the Cologne brewery is not an isolated case. It is still unclear how long brewery visitors will have to go without fries.

“We stopped laughing. Our oil suppliers can no longer serve us adequately, which is why we have decided to take this step.”

Managing Director of “Gaffel am Dom” Erwin Ott told the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger

An assessment by OVID, the association of the oilseed processing industry in Germany

Ukraine war causes shortage of supplies of cooking oils and protein feed

Ukraine and Russia are important suppliers of sunflowers, rapeseed, linseed and soy. The conflict is likely to further inflame the already tense situation on the markets.

According to the OVID Association of the Oilseed Processing Industry in Germany, the war in Ukraine will have a noticeable impact on the availability and prices of oilseeds and their products in Germany.

According to the OVID Association of the Oilseed Processing Industry in Germany, the war in Ukraine will have a noticeable impact on the availability and prices of oilseeds and their products in Germany. Ukraine with 51 percent and Russia with 27 percent are the world's most important export countries for sunflower oil. Germany covers 94 percent of its sunflower oil needs through imports.

“Our concern is first and foremost for the people, friends, employees and business partners in Ukraine,” emphasizes OVID President Jaana Kleinschmit von Lengefeld. The Russian attacks, the general mobilization in Ukraine and the sanctions that have been adopted are causing immediate restrictions on the production and logistics of oilseeds throughout the country and the Black Sea region. Numerous locations of OVID member companies with a total of several thousand employees are directly affected.

OVID therefore expects restrictions on the flow of sunflower, linseed and soy goods from the conflict region in the coming weeks and months. If there are short-term shortages of individual raw materials, they will be very difficult to substitute. In the medium term, the international flow of goods will be realigned and must be reassessed.

The conflict will also have an impact on the domestic supply of protein feed from sunflowers, rapeseed or soy for beef, pork and poultry. More than two thirds of the soy produced in Europe comes from Russia and Ukraine. Short-term compensation from alternative European origins is not available.

Linseed and rapeseed could also come into focus: almost 90 percent of the linseed processed in the EU is imported. Of these, 37 percent come from Russia and 5 percent from Ukraine. In addition, Germany imports 10 percent of the rapeseed processed in this country from Ukraine.

The OVID member companies are determined to make every effort to meet their delivery obligations and supply the markets as much as possible, despite this crisis of historic proportions and the feared restrictions on oilseeds and animal feed. Everyone involved in the supply chain should act with consideration and a sense of proportion in this situation.
