Facebook users are currently sharing a photo of an alleged frozen wave that can be found in Antarctica.

The photo shows an impressive “wave” of ice. Two people are standing at the foot of the supposed wave. The natural spectacle is said to be found in Antarctica. Many users wonder whether it is really a wave.

This is the photo:

The fact check

Even though this impressive structure looks like a wave, it is not. So anyone who had the romantic idea that an actual wave would suddenly freeze in its movement will unfortunately have to be disappointed.

The photo was taken by a geologist named Lucas K. Zoet in February 2011. Here we see the Union Glacier, which lies in the Ellsworth Mountain Range in West Antarctica. It was published in May 2011 in a photo contest on the website WIRED . You can find it in the 5th place in the slide gallery.

Zoet says the following about his photo:

“I was at this location as part of the PoleNET field team. We deploy passive seismometers and GPS stations in Antarctica to study crustal structure and uplift associated with glacier recoil.

Strictly speaking, the right part of the photo shows a metamorphosed sedimentary rock eruption. It is located in the middle of the Union Glacier and forces the wind to shape the ice into what is known as a “wind scoop”. The associated article and results can on the GeoScienceWorld website . You can view more photos of this impressive natural phenomenon on Lucas K. Zoet's personal website in the CV section.

Conclusion:

The common opinion on social media platforms is that it is a “frozen wave”, but what we see here is a so-called “wind scoop” that was formed by wind and ice.

In addition, the photo dates back to 2011.
