It is the largest association of fact-checking teams and research in German-speaking countries: The German-Austrian Digital Media Observatory (GADMO) starts on November 1st. The aim of the project is the coordinated fight against false claims and disinformation campaigns on the Internet.

The leading fact-checking organizations in German-speaking countries come together for the first time.
They cooperate with researchers from the Technical University of Dortmund and the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. The technical partner is the Athens Technology Center. GADMO will be funded by the EU Commission for the first two and a half years.
GADMO pursues four goals:
1. To bundle fact checks on a central platform in the future and thus make them more accessible to the public.
2. Identify and scientifically investigate disinformation campaigns.
3. To promote media literacy in Austria and Germany.
4. To check whether digital platforms and social networks are doing enough to combat disinformation.
“Disinformation, propaganda and lies are our greatest opponents in the fight for an enlightened society,” explains Peter Kropsch, chairman of the dpa board of directors. “Together we achieve a lot. In the GADMO project, practice and research work hand in hand across national borders.”
The German-Austrian cooperation project will become part of the Europe-wide network of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). This EU-funded, independent coordination body was launched in 2020 and is intended to combine the forces of fact-checking organizations, research and other experts in the fight against disinformation.
With GADMO, the network will now consist of nine regional centers that are active in 17 European countries. More centers will be added by the beginning of 2023. The project partners can work together across Europe via a common online platform and conduct research together. Social media platforms are also represented in the EDMO working groups in order to promote the exchange.
