After the company gas.de stopped supplying its customers with gas without warning and they had to switch to another supplier, the Brandenburg Consumer Center (VZB) represents one of those affected. Now she is being compensated for the damage amounting to several hundred euros. Rico Dulinski, lawyer at VZB, explains how consumers can react in similar cases and get their money back. The consumer advice centers provide a gas.de compensation calculator .
At the beginning of 2022, numerous customers of the gas supplier gas.de received final bills even though their contract had not yet expired.
Shortly afterwards, welcome letters from the new providers arrived. gas.de simply stopped supplying gas despite ongoing contracts - without any warning or termination. In such cases, the affected consumers automatically end up in the replacement supply and often pay significantly more compared to the contract originally concluded with gas.de.
The company's delivery stop means the gas price almost doubles for a consumer from Brandenburg. She turns to the VZB. She rejects an initially offered payment of 95 euros as compensation because the amount does not come close to covering her additional costs. Together with the Energy Arbitration Board, the VZB can ultimately achieve a compensation payment of 475 euros.
“If a supplier terminates a delivery contract prematurely and this is associated with additional costs, you should not simply accept that,” says Rico Dulinski, consumer advocate from Potsdam. He advises affected customers to stubbornly assert their own rights. “The consumer advice centers provide an online compensation calculator with which you can create an individual sample letter,” says the lawyer.
The calculator compares the costs that would have been incurred if the old gas.de contract had been continued at the agreed prices with the costs that would arise instead. This is often a considerable sum.
