A fake police wanted report is currently circulating on social media.

That obviously fake wanted report claims that a man may have been infected with the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and is now being sought across Germany.

Since this appears to be a “prank” to discredit the person, we have obscured the name and photo:

The fake wanted report
The fake wanted report

The text on the image reads:

Arson attack in Celle

The Hanover Homicide Squad is asking for your help

A possible infected person with the coronavirus [NAME] is being sought throughout Germany

The police are looking for a gentleman named [NAME], who was in the severely infected country of Iran just two weeks ago.
According to our information, he is registered in Celle, but we have not been able to reach the gentleman at his registered residence.”

Blatant logic, grammatical and spelling errors in the wanted report

It is completely understandable if the fake wanted call is shared by people who are not particularly good at spelling, as they are less likely to notice the errors, but the logic of the report is very flawed!

The wanted report begins with “ arson attack in Celle ,” but the rest of the text has nothing to do with it. Stylistically, the text is not structured like a usual police wanted report; the bumpy spelling and sometimes arbitrary capitalization of some words make this fake wanted report completely unbelievable.

This is what you need to know about private search calls:

  • Only law enforcement authorities are allowed to publicly search for people.
  • Criminals, not to mention suspects or people who are not even being investigated (!), also have personal rights . Nobody can override this with their own opinion.
  • These personal rights may be weakened under very specific circumstances Requirements that only apply in very rare cases.
  • Children and young people also have personal rights that may not be violated by private searches (pictures of supposedly wanted children, sick children, etc.).
  • Anyone who violates the personal rights of third parties must expect expensive warnings, claims for damages and compensation for pain and suffering and may be committing criminal offenses.
  • Parents often search for their missing children privately, even if this is the job of the police and can even hinder the search if the police first investigate in private and thereby warn a possible perpetrator. In addition, these parents should also remember to delete the post later; there is too great a risk that the post will simply be copied, meaning that the private search will still be floating around the internet years later!

To be clear: private search calls can lead to criminal liability. It is very likely that at least civil claims will arise.

Witch Hunt 2.0

Modern witch hunting on Facebook is a serious issue. It's always easy to express your displeasure and threaten people while you're sitting comfortably in front of your screen.

Unfortunately, far too few people are aware that such behavior can have serious consequences (if only for spreading such hate speech). It is not for nothing that there are laws that are intended to protect suspects, prohibit vigilantism, and prevent character assassination and slander. It is not without reason that laws protect our privacy and prohibit the unsolicited disclosure of personal data or the unauthorized use of photos.

Anyone who takes part in such a modern witch hunt is also committing a criminal offense.

Conclusion

That search call is not only brazenly fake, but also blatantly violates the man's personal rights and the copyright of the police logo. This means that the creator of the fake search notice is facing several lawsuits from several sides!
