When the name George Clooney is mentioned, most people probably first think of his roles in hit films or perhaps his irresistible smile. But this time George Clooney is using his charisma for something completely different: the fight against the spread of misinformation.
George Clooney and Kimmel: A duo with bite
The video, created in 2019, was featured on the American late-night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, often abbreviated simply to “JKL.” Hosted and produced by Jimmy Kimmel himself, the show has made a name for itself through its humorous comedy segments, creative skits and accurate parodies. But it's not just the humor that's in the foreground - “JKL” is also known for its political satire and doesn't shy away from dealing with current issues directly and bluntly.
The actor took on a subject that, while presented humorously, had a deeper and more serious message. George Clooney and Kimmel used their platform to raise awareness about the problem of fake news that is rampant in today's world.
George Cloony: “Sexiest Man Alive”
In the video, George Clooney introduced himself as an actor, director and two-time winner of the Sexiest Man Alive title. He stood in front of a white background and wore a suit.
The actor began by sharing that science has explained a number of important topics, including what subatomic particles are and the majesty of space. “Science allows us to cure diseases, communicate over long distances and fly,” he added.
These kinds of “stupidities ,” as Clooney called them, are dangerously contagious. He humorously referenced Trump's claim that windmills cause cancer and emphasized the importance of combating this type of misinformation.
"Sadly, however, the invaluable knowledge accumulated over centuries is now threatened by an epidemic: stupid fucking idiots talking stupid crap ," he said, showing clips of members of the Trump administration. This was followed by a clip of Inhofe holding up a snowball and trying to deny the existence of climate change. "Stupid crap is highly contagious and infects even the most stable of geniuses ," George Clooney continued, referencing something Trump once said about himself, before showing a clip of the president mocking the notion that the sound of a windmill could cause cancer.
UDUMASS: Fiction with a strong message
The highlight of the show was the introduction of “United to Defeat Untruthful Misinformation and Support Science” (UDUMASS). Despite the humorous approach and the fact that UDUMASS is a fictional organization, the real message is clear: it is time to stand up to misinformation.
George Clooney stressed that this “rampant stupidity” threatens our health, our planet and our security. He then explained that the purpose of the satirical advertising campaign was to support “United to Defeat Untruthful Misinformation and Support Science” was abbreviated UDUMASS
“Your generous donation to UDUMASS will provide much-needed knowledge to stupid fucking idiots on Facebook and Twitter worldwide,” he said. “Just $20 will convince a fucking idiot that climate change is real; $50 will get five brainless idiots to vaccinate their children, and $200 will teach 10 idiots that dinosaurs existed, but not at the same time as humans.”
“Together we can win the battle against stupidity, but we cannot do it alone ,” he said, before asking viewers to call a phone number. “The world needs your support, UDUMASS.”
Science as a lifeline
"When we think about the achievements of science - from curing disease to space travel - how can we allow ignorance and misinformation to threaten that progress?" asked George Clooney. He recalled the incident when Senator James Inhofe threw a snowball on the Senate floor to “prove” that climate change was not real.
A global fight
It's not just about the USA or political camps. It's about all of humanity. Kimmel cited the United Nations report that millions of species are at risk of extinction due to factors such as climate change and pollution.
Conclusion: A timely wake-up call
Clooney's appearance on Kimmel was more than entertainment. It was a wake-up call. An appeal to all of us to take a closer look, to question and stand up for the truth. At a time when fake news often shouts louder than facts, it is crucial that each individual takes responsibility. It's not enough to watch passively. As Clooney and Kimmel have shown us, we all need to take action, educate ourselves, and help others do the same. This is the only way we can win the fight against the flood of misinformation.
