There was a time, just a few decades ago, when many Germans became refugees, namely during the Second World War. But are we really seeing a boat full of Germans here?

“German refugees on the way to America”
...that's what the creator of this Facebook post claims.
Were there actually German refugees?
Of course there were. Between 1944 and 1950, i.e. during the Second World War, there was a forced migration of 14 million Germans , which is considered the largest in modern history. But even before the war began, many Germans fled, mostly to neighboring countries, because the USA was a “point of no return”, making it difficult to return to Germany. 130,000 Germans moved to the USA by the end of the 1930s .
And what does the picture show us?
Even if you look with a magnifying glass: not a single German !
What we see here are US soldiers entering the New York harbor after the so-called “V-Day” (Victory Day), i.e. the victory over Germany in World War II. The image can be found on numerous sites with historical images, including “ Rare Historical Photos .”
Conclusion
Even though there were German refugees before, during and after the Second World War who made their way to the USA, you don't see them in this picture, but rather US soldiers on their way back home after the victory in 1945.
