First findings from the BMBF project “ÄrDiTec”: Study provides initial results on the biggest triggers of digital stress.

Stress at work caused by digital triggers? As part of the BMBF project “ÄrDiTec”, which , 12 factors were identified that can be significant when working with digital technologies and media. These include, for example, omnipresence, the feeling of constantly having to be available, and a shorter reaction time by dissolving the boundary between work and private life.

More than 5,000 employees were examined. One in five of those surveyed perceives digital stress strongly. Here are the five most important reasons why digitalization can make you sick, especially in professional life:

1. Performance monitoring

Collecting performance data in particular causes us stress. Because constant comparison with others becomes a feeling of constant monitoring and evaluation.

2. Transparent person

Anyone who counts their work colleagues and even their superiors as Facebook friends often becomes a transparent person. Privacy suffers, and there is also the need to be constantly available.

Tip: Turn off your cell phone, stop checking emails after work and separate who can see what on Facebook etc.

3. Unreliability

Regardless of whether it is a malfunction, a failure or just the wrong cable being used: if the technology fails, digital stress is high. This particularly affects those aged 20 to mid-30.

It is even worse when applications have proven to be effective but are not allowed to be used at work.

4. Interruptions

Technology problems, spontaneous messages or calls disrupt the flow of work. There is also the feeling of having to work faster: “After the interruption, I’ll start again.”

Tip: If you want to get something done, turn off your cell phone.

5. Technical uncertainty

Frequently changing technologies is stressful. You have to learn how to use new apps and devices. This takes time. If this is not available, it creates pressure and fear that the job will be shaky.

Tip: Choose future-proof technology and stick with it.
