If someone promises you a million-dollar win over the phone – be careful! There is fraud here.
Promise of winnings on the phone – the most important thing to start with:
- The police are currently warning about fraud via telephone.
- The callers claim to have won the lottery or won a large sum of money. In order to receive the amount, those called have to buy an expensive voucher card in advance.
- Caution! There is a scam behind this.
Who doesn't dream of winning big and winning millions? But be careful if someone promises you such winnings over the phone. Unfortunately, in most cases it is too good to be true and can end bitterly.
This also applies to the so-called grandchild trick, in which the fraudsters pretend to be a grandchild of the victim and need money. This is how criminals repeatedly obtain large amounts of money.
The police are currently warning about various scams and telephone tricks:
Press release from the Landau Police Department
On January 31, 2020, there were various attempts at telephone fraud in the PI Germersheim service area.
A 66-year-old received a call in Lingenfeld. He was led to believe that criminal proceedings were ongoing against him and that he now had the opportunity to reach an agreement out of court. He immediately realized that this was nonsense and ended the conversation.
In Lustadt, an 85-year-old woman received a call from a non-existent granddaughter. She wanted to visit the 85-year-old because she urgently needed money. Here too, the 85-year-old recognized the attempted fraud and ended the conversation.

A 59-year-old woman received a call in Ottersheim. She was led to believe that she had won over 30,000 euros. In order to claim the prize, however, she had to buy an online voucher worth EUR 500 and give the code over the phone. The initial joy of winning disappeared and the 59-year-old reported the attempted fraud to the local police station.

Press release from the Gotha State Police Inspectorate
A 78-year-old woman was promised an alleged lottery win on the phone last Saturday. The lady was supposed to buy voucher cards worth 500 euros and hand them over to a money messenger. The money messenger would then give her a suitcase containing the winnings of 200,000 euros.
The prepaid cards were not purchased and there was no associated financial loss because the police were called and a report was filed for attempted fraud.
Press release from the Goslar police station
On Monday, March 2nd, 2020, an 80-year-old reported to the Pst. Braunlage and announces that she was a victim of fraud. According to this, alleged employees of a lottery had contacted the lady by telephone and informed her that she had won a large amount of money.
However, if you win a large sum of money, it is necessary for the caller to provide a certain amount of security/deposit before the payment is made. For this purpose, she was asked several times to purchase “Google Play” vouchers in supermarkets.

She was then asked by telephone to provide the corresponding voucher code. The injured party gradually suffered total damage amounting to 1,240 euros. Of course, she didn't get paid the prize money.
This is a so-called “call center scam with the promise of a competition”. The police point out that competitions in which you have to deposit your own money beforehand are never serious.
