We've had a few inquiries about these goats that have climbed and are standing on a tree.

First of all: This is not a photomontage! These include this and similar pictures on Facebook that are making the rounds.

The goats climb the argan trees in Morocco.

The valuable argan oil is obtained from the fruits of the argan tree or its seeds. The argan trees are extremely old and only occur in an area of approximately 8000 km² in Morocco.

This area is extremely dry and barren. The goats that live there eat the argan fruits, which are indigestible for us humans. Because of their anatomy, goats are very well suited to climbing trees. All of our domestic goats are descended from ibex and are therefore extremely good at climbing. So the goats eat the argan fruits and the leaves of the argan trees.

Then they excrete the argan nuclei again and they can then be collected. In addition, the tree cores are distributed more widely because they are sown over a wide area. However, experts are still arguing about whether grazing the trees does more harm than good.
