Eye-catching flyers from alleged gold and fur buyers are appearing more and more frequently in weekly newspapers and among the huge number of brochures. Some of them offer horrendous sums for old fur coats and gold goods of all kinds. SWR market check how serious these dealers really are .

Does the advertising keep what it promises?

The advertising papers offer large sums of money for furs of all kinds and old gold. Transactions should be processed quickly and easily. Various retailers even offer to come directly to interested parties' homes to check the goods on site and make an offer.

But be careful! No reputable dealer would ever come to a customer's home!

However, the fur coats only serve as an excuse. The dealer's true interest lies in the gold, which he wants to buy from his customer at a bargain price.

The SWR market check brought one of these traders into his home under the pretext of an inheritance.

This dealer was also only interested in gold and, after checking the goods for authenticity, made an initial offer. However, this was 8,000 euros below the expert's estimated value. An ID card or other proof of identity is not necessary to process the transaction.

Fraudulent family business

If you look closely, you will notice that the images that adorn the gold dealers' flyers can also be found on advertising leaflets from other dealers. Matthias Bauer from the Baden-Württemberg Consumer Center even suspects there is a larger network behind it, a family association, with the task of handling business quickly, unbureaucratically and without the possibility of recourse from the consumer.

Why does this scam even work?

Since pricing itself is not subject to criminal prosecution, measures can only be taken if an actual crime is suspected.

“In general, consumer and fair trade law is sufficiently flexible to cover new business models and behaviors such as the sales practices described below. Within the scope of its responsibility, the BMJ continually examines whether there is a need for adjustments.”

Federal Ministry of Justice

However, since the buyers do not identify themselves, conceal their identity or even falsify it, it is even more difficult to take action against it.
