With Google Family Link you can monitor and manage your child's cell phone usage. Our content partner from “Saferinternet” shows how to set up the free app.

But first: What is Google Family Link?

Google Family Link is a free app that allows you to monitor your child's use of Android devices (phone and tablet). With Google Family Link you can, among other things, control what content your child can access, track location and set daily usage times.

It therefore falls under the category of technical child protection , although it is up to you how strict you make the settings and whether you want to use it to monitor your child or just protect them from unpleasant content.

Note: In order to use an Android device, your child necessarily needs a Google account

Google Family Link is an app for Android devices . If your child has an iPhone, Apple Screen Time a better choice. If you have an iPhone and your child has an Android device, you can easily use Google Family Link.

Set rules for cell phone use via app

With Google Family Link you can set the duration of mobile and app usage . Once the time limit is reached, the device or certain apps can no longer be used. Your child can then only make or receive calls - this ensures that your child can reach you even in emergencies!

You can decide individually for each day of the week how much time your child can spend on their cell phone . also specify periods of time during which the device may not be used at all (e.g. at night).

You can also decide which apps your child can use and how. Does your child have to ask you if they want to download an app ? Are only apps with a certain age requirement to be downloaded? Which apps can always be used and which only for a certain time ?

To ensure smooth media use, it is advisable to set up family rules together with your child - technical child protection applications should only be used in addition to this. Here you will find guidance on how to make sensible decisions about usage times .

Block certain content

Restrict content and protect your child from inappropriate content . Filter offensive search results and websites with sexually explicit and violent content . If necessary, also block individual websites . However, remember that filters do not offer 100% protection against unsuitable content . Therefore, stay in touch with your child and prepare them for problematic content .

Get location

You can also get your child's location . However, do not track your child's location without their knowledge , as this jeopardizes your good foundation of trust. Do not rely entirely on the location function, as it can be faulty or fail if reception is poor. Be sure to discuss how your child can keep you informed of their whereabouts - e.g. B. if your child spontaneously wants to go to a friend's house after school.

Google Family Link allows you to configure basic settings for apps. Sharpen your child's device. In our privacy guides for YouTube , YouTube Kids , WhatsApp , TikTok and Co. you will find step-by-step instructions for detailed security settings.
