If requested, Google will delete images of minors that have already been published to protect their privacy.
Users can submit a discoverability request to Google. This means that anyone under 18, their parent or guardian can fill out the appropriate form to report the image in question in search results.
Image URLs, search query terms that lead to the image and links for search pages that contain the image can be specified. Google will then check whether the request for deletion is legitimate and will contact the applicant if there is still a need for information.
Images don't disappear completely
However, there is at least one catch - Google itself draws attention to this: Removing an image from Google results does not make it completely disappear from the Internet.
But Danny Sullivan, who is responsible for the project at Google, still thinks the offer is good:
“We believe this change will help give young people more control over their digital footprint and where their images appear in search.”
More control for young people
Google is now making true what the company announced at the beginning of the year. It said steps are being taken to strengthen the privacy of minors and ensure the protection of their psychological well-being.
The move comes at a time of intense debate in the US about the negative impact of Facebook on the mental health of teenagers and the lack of protection for children.
Some senators have already threatened to create a new regulator. Technology companies are then trying to give themselves a better image and differentiate themselves from Facebook.
TikTok, YouTube and Co
The equally popular services TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat want to explain to the US Congress next Tuesday how their practices differ from those of Facebook.
Meanwhile, Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram, an ad-supported online photo and video sharing service, have also changed their practices. An “Instagram for children” is planned.
