The tragic fire in the monkey house at the Krefeld Zoo has received another report that is being hotly debated online: an injured gorilla was shot by a police officer.
Gorilla shot - let's take a quick look back: On the night of New Year's Eve, the monkey house in the Krefeld zoo burned down completely. All but two of the animals died.
According to the police, the reason for this fire was so-called sky lanterns, which are prohibited. The perpetrators are Krefeld women who started these lanterns without any malicious intent and also reported themselves to the police.

According to the NRW Interior Ministry, police officers also secured the fire during the night. These were positioned around the monkey house and were intended to protect the emergency services and to stop injured or panicked animals in an emergency. However, this case did not occur.
Nevertheless, a weapon was used in the end. The media reports consistently say:

At around 8 a.m. two seriously injured animals were found, one of which the veterinarian euthanized. The officer killed the gorilla after the police commander gave him permission.
According to the state parliament's report, the emotional strain on all emergency services and the zoo's staff was immense. Several caring conversations were also held with the police officer concerned in the following days. In the Neue Westfälische Verena Schäffer (domestic policy spokeswoman for the Greens) is quoted as saying:
“The report from the Ministry of the Interior only gives an idea of how stressful the operation must have been for the fire brigade, rescue service and police as well as the zoo employees.”
