A photo shows the Swedish climate activist with her mother and two expensive armchairs. We describe here what lies behind the image and the argument.

In the photo you not only see mother and daughter, but also two armchairs. These two armchairs have now become somewhat famous on social media because the two seats are used to discredit Greta Thunberg's core statements.

Here's the fact check: Yes, this photo is real. It was taken in the family's apartment in Stockholm on April 17th, long before Greta Thunberg was even discussed in the media. The photo itself can be found on IMAGO IMAGES, where the following description of the image was also published ( see here ):

The note at this point: We must first point out that this is a photo for which you must purchase the license for further publication. This means that using Sharepic without the associated license can, under certain circumstances, lead to a warning from the platform.

The armchairs shown on it are probably the designer armchairs that were criticized. However, it cannot be confirmed 100% based on the picture, but it is quite likely due to the identical appearance.

Note: Precisely because designer armchairs have high prices, there are products that imitate this design. In this respect, it is not clear whether these armchairs are the designers' original armchairs. Furthermore, there is no evidence as to what prices ultimately applied to the armchairs, as different providers also offer different and quite low prices for the armchairs.

A comparison via Google shows that the prices for the armchair “instead of the manufacturer price of €5,750.00 (as mentioned in the posting) vary significantly depending on the version and dealer ( see here ).

Argument structure

What's exciting here is the level that is being built to criticize Thunberg's core statements. The cost of the furniture is used as a benchmark for the content of your statements. Owning a non-vegan chair does not fundamentally contradict your commitment to the global climate.

The question can be put even more clearly: What does the armchair change in Thunberg's core statements that one should listen to the scientists' statements and follow them?

According to the argument structure presented, no one who owns an expensive or non-vegan product should ultimately be able to advocate for climate protection. This is therefore an attempt to create an insurmountable hurdle and an incredibility bubble.

Here, interestingly, we are at a noteworthy level of comparison: the young student is held responsible for her parents' consumer behavior. She is denied protest because her previous generation owns/uses certain products. Ergo: The behavior of the generations from the 60s, 70s and 80s, which were partly in a deep sleep when it came to climate protection, is now being blamed on the climate protests of the younger generation.

Apart from the fact that an expensive piece of furniture that lasts one or more decades can be more sustainable than a cheaply produced piece of furniture from a discount store. However, that shouldn't play any further role here, because the observation of the allegations against Thunberg has shown again and again in the past few months that her every step is being watched intensively and every deviant action towards her, no matter how small, is used to influence her actions discredit.

Existing narrative: Greta’s business idea

The picture with the designer chair is intended to underline the story of a “business idea” within the family. This is a regularly occurring narrative that is used to discredit Greta Thunberg's core statements ( see ).

In addition, there is now a remarkable collection of accusations, discredits, sometimes deliberate false reports and satires regarding Greta Thunberg, so much so that we could almost a separate category for it .
